The Knotting Mathematics and Art: A Conference for Low Dimensional Topology and Mathematical Art

University  South Florida, Tampa
November 1-4, 2007

Mathematics and Art are fundamental parameters of human consciousness and indispensable tools for the seeing the invisible and knowing the intangible. As languages they give expression to the beauty of abstraction and to the complexity of reality. It is in their collaboration and connection we see the magic of interdisciplinary study.

With this in mind, the department of Mathematics and Statistics, USF, Osaka City University Advanced Mathematical Institute and JohnSimsProjects, proudly presents a unique conference that interweaves the discipline of research mathematics and mathematical art through a schedule of lectures, workshops and exhibitions.

The conference slated November 1-4, 2007 opens with the Nagle Lecture by John H. Conway from Princeton University on November 1st. Plenary lectures will also feature Thomas Banschoff, Charles Frohman, J. Scott Carter, Seiichi Kamada, Mikhail Khovanov, Yasutaka Nakanishi, Ivars Peterson, Tony Robbin, and Carlo Seguin. and other noted mathematicians and artists. A series of exhibitions created for the conference, called Rhythm of Structure: Beyond the Mathematics, curated by John Sims will be hosted at Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, Center Gallery and Oliver Gallery on USF Tampa campus. The exhibitions will include mathematical art and visual mathematics by Thomas Banschoff, Brent Collins, John H. Conway, Helaman Ferguson,, Bathesheba Grossman, George Hart, Charles O. Perry, Tony Robbin, Carlo Sequin, John Sims, Chaim Goodman-Strauss.
