Forum signature linking is a technique used to build back links to a website. This is the process of using forum communities that allow outbound hyperlinks in their member's signature. This can be a fast method to build up inbound links to a website; it can also produce some targeted traffic if the website is relevant to the forum topic. It should be stated that forums using the no follow attribute would have no actual Search Engine Optimization value.

According to many online sources, posting signature links to your website on forums helps search engine rankings just as well as posting to online directories.

People have stated that they do indeed have some value, especially when the pages you have links on are properly indexed. Using an online tool, you can see that search engines index many of the pages where your posts and signature links appear.

Still other people go even further to say that no back link is a bad back link unless it is from a banned domain, a penalized link farm, or is a busted (reported) paid link. Other wise they cannot hurt. Even if they are no following, that just relates to not passing counting for page rank. The no follow tag effects the Google spider. Many people do not really care much about Page ranking anyways. Even no follow links still appear in Yahoo's site explorer. Forum links do have bearing especially on threads that receive credibility or page rank. Your signature's link gives you a stronger back link especially if your site is relevant to the info in the forum post.

Furthermore, people say that posting on boards that allow you to include a link to your website is a cheap and non-technical way to increase your search engines by building relevant, in-bound links to your website or blog.

Every business niche will have a different forum to post on, so take some time to look at who is posting around the message board and ask yourself is the subject matter is relevant to your customers.

Do not waste time signing up for every forum. Look for vibrant, active communities to join; it will help you more in search engine rankings and human traffic.

You especially need to find out if you are allowed to add links to websites in your signature.  Without links, it may be fun to join in on the discussion topic, but it is not doing anything for your business’s web site.
